CLEARING HIS EFFECTS

I slide open the drawer

I am ten years old, again, whispering
“You mean it’s not your gun, grandpa?
The one you used to shoot the Hun?”

“Behave yourself.  Show some respect.”
Grandpa had never met any Germans.
The Luger was found on his best friend’s

body.  After the war.
